Chance

Written by Jacob Ibrag

He looked out towards the still lake and thought

about the girl that had just left. She sat next to him

for nearly twenty minutes, stealing stares every

couple of seconds and yet he was petrified to say a

thing. The moment he’d try to look back, he’d just

as quickly refrain and occupy his attention with his

phone screen. It wasn’t always like this, used to be

a time when talking to people was involuntary as

breathing. He wanted nothing more than a second

chance to prove that he wasn’t crippled by the tech

in his pocket. He wanted to believe that things

would’ve been different, ‘but who am I kidding.’

Sad, but true. It seems as if cell phones have replaced conversation.

Oh technology…technology isn’t the problem, it’s us. Phones, tablets, and computers are inanimate objects. We often find something to fill our time for whatever reason, and tech devices just happen to be the culprit. Thanks for sharing.

This reminds me of the time I went to a summer family barbeque and everyone under forty were on their phones; including myself. Technology and social media seeped into reality; taking away time where we should be living in the physical.

At this point, we’ve become addicted. It’s a twisted reality, one which has swallowed us whole without us really noticing. One day I’m hanging out with my friends playing a little ball while simultaneously making fun of this strange new website called Facebook, and the next day my eyes are painted by notifications coming from my computer screen. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve actually played a game of basketball and I hate that. I’m just hoping something changes, nothing drastic but something that can help us live again.
